• Analyzing Blackjack Hands

If you want to go beyond basic Blackjack strategy, you'll need to evaluate the hands in the game, both winning and losing ones. Doing so will help you gain perspective not just on how to play but also what to expect in certain situations, similar to Poker.

In a six deck game, for example, you get dealt 17 and the casino dealer has a soft 17. While most will be content to stand pat, the truth is that unless the up card is a 6, the odds are against you. The odds are even worse if she shows you a 5, but if it's a 9, it's more favorable.

If you have a soft 17, the correct Blackjack strategy is to always hit, but if it's a stiff hand, and / or the dealer stands on soft 17 as well, you are at a disadvantage. It's for this reason why this hand is quite difficult to play.

Getting an 18 in Blackjack is better obviously. It is a profitable hand overall, because any up card from 2 to 8 gives you the edge. It gets better with a 19, as the only thing that is likely to beat you is an up card of 10.

A 20 on the other hand, is very powerful, and as tempting as it may be, you should never go for the split option. It's almost as good as a Blackjack, so don't mess with it. Statistics show that nearly 70% of all wins come from holding tens or other combinations of 20. In multiple deck games, hands like A9, A8 and 10-9 also account for most victories.

The biggest losing hands, not surprisingly, are the stiff ones: hard 12 to 17. When you get these hands, you should always resort to basic Blackjack strategy because it's the only correct way to play them. You probably won't win as often as you like, but playing them according to the math is still the best option.

At this point it should also be apparent why casinos don't like card counting; if you can keep track of the number of cards remaining on the deck, you can make some serious money by modifying your wagers. But even if you don't use card counting you can still win and save your bankroll by simply knowing the difference between a good and bad Blackjack hand.

Blackjack hands aren't as difficult to analyze as Poker combos, and should be considered by players as something they must always do. Spend some time assessing their worth and you can eliminate most of the edge of the casino.
